Measuring Your Own Desk Height Instead of Guessing
The standard way to work out a comfortable desk height is a ratio — elbow height as a percentage of total stature — because it only needs one number (your height) to produce an estimate. It’s a genuinely useful starting point, but it’s still an estimate built on population averages, not a measurement of you. If you want the more precise number, or if the ratio-based figure hasn’t felt quite right, measuring your own resting elbow height directly takes about five minutes and needs nothing more than a tape measure and a wall.
Why the ratio can be off for you specifically
The 65%-standing and 43%-seated elbow-height ratios the desk height calculator uses are averages across a lot of measured bodies, but arm length, torso length, and leg length don’t all scale together in every individual — two people of identical height can have meaningfully different arm lengths. For most people the ratio lands close enough to be a fine starting point; for anyone whose proportions sit noticeably outside average, a direct measurement will track their actual comfortable height more closely than any ratio can.
What you’re actually trying to measure
The number you want is the height of the bottom of your elbow when your upper arm hangs straight down from a relaxed shoulder and your forearm is bent at roughly a right angle, measured straight down to the floor (standing) or to the seat of your chair (sitting). It’s not your height, your shoulder height, or the height of your hand resting on a table — specifically the point of the elbow, in a fully relaxed hang, not a raised or braced position.
Measuring standing elbow height
Stand normally against a wall with your arms hanging loosely at your sides — don’t consciously hold them still, just let them settle. Have someone else mark the wall at the exact height of the bottom point of your elbow, or use a bookshelf or door frame with a straight edge you can slide down to touch your elbow and hold in place while you step away to measure it. Measure from the floor to that mark with a tape measure. Repeat it once more to check for consistency — a few millimeters of difference between the two readings is normal, more than a centimeter or two usually means the arm wasn’t fully relaxed on one of the attempts.
Measuring seated elbow height
Sit in your usual chair with your feet flat on the floor and your upper arms hanging straight down from relaxed shoulders, forearms roughly horizontal. Measure from the floor to the bottom of your elbow, the same way as the standing measurement. This number will typically be noticeably lower than the standing figure — not just because you’re sitting, but because the ratio between standing and seated elbow height isn’t a simple subtraction of chair height; sitting changes your whole upper-body posture relative to the floor.
Comparing your number to the ratio estimate
Once you have a measured number, it’s worth comparing it against what the ratio would have predicted for your height, to see how close the population-average estimate actually was for you. For a 160cm-tall person, the calculator’s ratio predicts a seated elbow height of about 68.8cm (27.1in) and a standing elbow height of about 104cm (40.9in). For a 188cm-tall person, it predicts roughly 80.8cm (31.8in) seated and about 122.2cm (48.1in) standing. If your own measured number comes out within a couple of centimeters of the ratio’s prediction for your height, the ratio is working well for your proportions and you can use the calculator directly going forward. If it’s off by more than that, your measured number is the one to trust — use it as your actual target desk height rather than re-running the calculator each time, since a direct measurement of your own body will always be more specific to you than an average.
From elbow height to desk height
Whichever number you land on — measured or calculated — the same downstream adjustments still apply: the desktop itself sits at that elbow-height figure, and the keyboard or typing surface sits a few centimeters below it, since typing at exactly elbow height tends to push the wrists upward. If you’ve measured your own seated elbow height at, say, 72cm, treat 72cm as the desktop target and something around 67cm as the keyboard target, using the same roughly 5cm offset the calculator applies to its own ratio-based figure.
Measuring alone, without a helper
A second person makes this easier but isn’t strictly necessary. Standing next to a door frame or a tall bookshelf, rest a rigid, flat object — a hardcover book, a clipboard, a ruler held level — on top of your relaxed elbow, slide it sideways until it touches the frame, and press it flat against the frame with your free hand while you carefully step away, keeping the object level. Mark the frame at the bottom edge of the object, then measure from the floor to the mark. It takes a couple of tries to get a level, un-tilted reading solo, so repeat it two or three times and use the most consistent result rather than the first attempt.
Converting between centimeters and inches
Furniture specifications, especially for desks and monitor arms, are sold in a mix of centimeters and inches depending on the manufacturer and region, so it’s worth having your measured number in both units. Divide a centimeter figure by 2.54 to get inches, or multiply an inch figure by 2.54 to get centimeters — a measured seated elbow height of 72cm converts to about 28.3in, for instance. Keeping both units written down avoids a mismatch later when you’re comparing your number against a product listing that only states one of them.

Common measuring mistakes
A few things reliably throw the measurement off. Tensing or slightly raising the shoulder while someone marks the wall adds height that won’t be there once you relax at the actual desk. Measuring to the top of the forearm instead of the bottom point of the elbow overstates the number by a couple of centimeters. Measuring in shoes when you’ll be working barefoot or in socks (or the reverse) introduces a small but real offset for the standing figure. And measuring seated elbow height in a chair set to an unusual height, rather than wherever your chair actually sits day to day, measures the chair as much as it measures you.
Measure again if your chair or shoes change
A seated elbow-height measurement is only valid for the chair height it was taken at. Raise or lower your chair afterward, switch to a chair with a different seat height, or change what you typically wear on your feet while standing at the desk, and the number drifts along with it. It’s a two-minute remeasurement, not a reason to avoid changing chairs, but it’s worth remembering to redo it rather than assuming an old number still applies.
Who benefits most from measuring directly
Everyone can measure their own elbow height, but the payoff is largest for people at the edges of the height range a ratio is built on, or with proportions that don’t track average — a notably long or short torso relative to height, longer or shorter arms than typical for a given stature, or a body shape that doesn’t fit the average the ratio describes well. Someone very close to average height and proportions will likely find their measured number lands within a centimeter of the calculator’s prediction, in which case the ratio was doing its job and there’s little practical benefit to remeasuring often. Someone at either extreme of the height range, or simply curious whether the ratio-based estimate is actually serving them well, stands to gain the most from the five minutes it takes to check.
This still isn’t a medical measurement
A tape-measure reading of your own elbow height is more precise than a population-average ratio, but it’s still a comfort target, not a clinical or occupational-health assessment. Use it the same way you’d use the calculator’s output: as a considered starting point, adjusted afterward by how your shoulders, wrists, and back actually feel once you’ve worked at that height for a few days.
