How Far Should Your Monitor Really Be From Your Eyes?
Monitor placement gets far less attention than desk height, but it causes just as much end-of-day discomfort — usually in the form of dry, tired eyes, a dull headache behind the brow, or a stiff neck from leaning toward the screen. The fix is often as simple as moving the monitor a few inches.
Distance should scale with screen size
A bigger monitor needs to sit further away to fill roughly the same amount of your visual field as a smaller one closer up. A widely used approximation is to set the viewing distance at about 1.6 times the screen’s diagonal size, with a comfortable range from roughly 1.3 to 2.0 times the diagonal. A 24-inch monitor lands around 38 inches away under that rule; a 34-inch ultrawide needs to sit back closer to 54 inches to feel similar.
Why closer isn’t automatically better
It’s tempting to pull a monitor in close so text looks bigger, but sitting too near forces your eyes to hold a near-focus position for hours at a stretch, which is a well-known contributor to digital eye strain and dry eyes. If the text is too small at the recommended distance, the better fix is usually to increase the operating-system or application zoom level, not to move the monitor closer.
There’s a floor, even for small screens
Below roughly 20 inches, your eyes have to work harder to focus regardless of how small the monitor is, so it’s worth treating that as an absolute minimum distance even for a compact secondary display. If your desk is too shallow to hit that distance, consider a shallower monitor arm or mount rather than accepting a distance that’s uncomfortably close.
What if the ideal distance doesn’t fit your desk?
A large monitor pushed back to its full recommended distance sometimes simply doesn’t fit on a standard desk depth. When that happens, you have a few reasonable options: choose a smaller or curved monitor that needs less distance to feel comfortable, mount it on an arm that lets you fine-tune the exact position, or accept a slightly closer distance and lean more heavily on larger fonts and zoom settings to compensate.
Height matters alongside distance
Distance is only half the setup. The top of the screen should sit at roughly eye level or just below it, so your gaze tilts slightly downward rather than upward — looking up at a screen for hours is a common cause of neck strain. A monitor arm or a stack of sturdy books under a fixed stand is often enough to get the height right once the distance is sorted.
A comfort range, not a strict rule
Eyesight, screen resolution, and personal preference all shift the ideal number a little in either direction. Use the diagonal-based distance as a starting range, then adjust by feel — if you find yourself leaning in to read something, either the distance is too great or the text is simply too small, and it’s worth fixing whichever one is actually the problem.
Multiple monitors need the same math, twice
A common mistake with a dual-monitor setup is to treat the pair as one wide screen and position both at the distance suited to the combined width. Each monitor should instead be placed at the distance appropriate for its own individual diagonal size, angled slightly inward so the outer edges aren’t noticeably further away than the center. If one monitor is your primary display and the other is occasional reference material, it’s reasonable to prioritize the primary screen’s distance and angle the secondary one purely for visibility rather than sustained close reading.
Blue light and screen breaks still matter
Distance solves the geometric part of the problem, but it doesn’t address the other common contributor to tired eyes: staring at any fixed distance for hours without a break. The widely cited 20-20-20 habit — every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet away for 20 seconds — gives your focusing muscles a chance to relax regardless of how well the monitor itself is positioned. Getting the distance right and taking regular breaks address two different causes of the same end-of-day eye fatigue, and neither fully substitutes for the other.
