How Far Should Your Monitor Really Be From Your Eyes?
Monitor placement gets far less attention than desk height, but it can matter just as much to end-of-day comfort — dry or tired-feeling eyes, a dull tension across the brow, or a stiff neck from leaning toward the screen are all common complaints, and the fix is often as simple as moving the monitor a few inches.
Distance should scale with screen size
A bigger monitor needs to sit further away to fill roughly the same amount of your visual field as a smaller one closer up. A commonly recommended starting point is to set the viewing distance at about 1.6 times the screen’s diagonal size, with a comfortable range from roughly 1.3 to 2.0 times the diagonal. Why closer isn’t automatically better
It’s tempting to pull a monitor in close so text looks bigger, but holding a near-focus position for hours at a stretch is one of the most common reasons eyes end up feeling dry and tired by evening. There’s a floor, even for small screens
Below roughly 20 inches of distance, eyes generally have to work harder to focus regardless of how small the monitor itself is, so the calculator treats that as an absolute floor even for a compact secondary display. What if the ideal distance doesn’t fit your desk?

Height matters alongside distance
Distance is only half the setup. A commonly recommended starting point for height is to keep the top of the screen at roughly eye level or just below it, so your gaze tilts slightly downward rather than upward — a screen positioned so you have to tip your head back to see the top of it tends to feel tiring in the neck well before the workday is over. A monitor arm, or a stack of sturdy books under a fixed stand, is often enough to get the height close once the distance itself is sorted.
Resolution changes how small text can be before it blurs
Two monitors of the same diagonal size can call for different amounts of zoom at the same distance if their resolutions differ. A higher-resolution panel packs more pixels into the same physical screen, so text and icons rendered at a given operating-system scale look smaller and sharper than the same content on a lower-resolution panel of the same size. A comfort range, not a strict rule

Multiple monitors need the same math, twice
A common mistake with a dual-monitor setup is to treat the pair as one wide screen and position both at a distance suited to the combined width. Each monitor should instead sit at the distance appropriate for its own individual diagonal size — two 24-inch monitors both want the same roughly 38-inch distance a single 24-inch monitor would, not the much greater distance a single screen that wide would need. Angling both screens slightly inward keeps their outer edges from sitting noticeably further away than the center. If one monitor is your primary display and the other is occasional reference material, it’s reasonable to prioritize the primary screen’s distance and height, and angle the secondary one purely for visibility rather than sustained close reading.
Laptops are a special case
A laptop’s built-in screen is small and fixed close to the keyboard by design, which usually puts it well inside the comfortable distance range for its own diagonal size — a 14-inch laptop screen wants to sit around 22.4in away by the same ratio, but the hinge fixes it more like 18-20 inches from a typical seated position. Glare and brightness change how close feels comfortable
Distance isn’t the only variable that decides how a screen feels to look at. A monitor facing a bright window, or set brighter than the room around it, tends to feel harder on the eyes at any distance, which can show up looking like a distance problem when it’s really a glare and contrast problem. Turning the monitor perpendicular to windows rather than facing or backing onto them, and matching screen brightness roughly to the room’s ambient light rather than running it at maximum, often fixes discomfort that moving the monitor closer or further away never would.
